This striking sculpture features a pair of traditional gilt-bronze mythical guardian lions, known locally in the Kathmandu Valley as Chhepu Chhe or Singha. Traditionally positioned as protective sentinels flanking the entrances of Newar Buddhist viharas, Hindu temples, and sacred shrines, these figures are captured in a powerful, alert standing posture on individual rectangular lotus pedestals. Every detail—from their bulging, watchful eyes and sharp fangs to their outstretched red tongues—is meticulously sculpted to ward off evil spirits and negative energy. Their muscular limbs are adorned with stylized floral joint plates, and they bear decorative chains and collars around their necks, adding a sense of royal grandeur to their fierce countenances.

In terms of material and artistic composition, the sculptures showcase a flawless integration of classical Newar metalwork traditions. Cast from a premium copper alloy using the lost-wax technique, the statues are entirely covered in a luminous, radiant layer of 24K gold-gilding that beautifully reflects light across their textured manes and contoured bodies. Vibrant polychrome pigments are carefully hand-painted onto the faces to highlight the expressive eyes, white claws, and fierce mouths, creating a lifelike presence. This synthesis of high-level metallurgy, dynamic mythical anatomy, and spiritual purpose serves as an enduring testament to the rich sculptural heritage of Nepal.
